Daniel Patrick Doyle, Sr. peacefully passed away at the age of 79 on August 9, 2009 at his home after a long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome.

Born October 23, 1929 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the Army during the Korean conflict. Dan was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in April of 1955.

Dan is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Marion, of West Milford, NJ and his four children: Daniel P. Doyle, Jr, and his wife Michelle of Warwick, NY; Cathleen Quinn of Wantage, NJ and her partner John Warholak; Thomas Doyle and his wife Jane of Stroudsburg, PA; and Constance Osusky and her husband Alan of Vernon, NJ. Also surviving are 4 brothers and sisters: Dolores Southard of Little Falls, Minnesota; Glenn Doyle of Moline, Illinois; Judith Gebera of Tonawanda, NY; and Marilee Doyle of St. Regis Falls, NY. He is also survived by his four adoring grandchildren: Rebecca, Patrick, Samantha, and Zackary.

Dan graduated as the Salutitorian from Port Credit High School in Mississauga, Ontario but didn’t attend graduation ceremonies because he had to work. In 1948 Dan relocated to the United States, where his first job was as a timekeeper for the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel. After his stint in the Army, Dan was re-hired by American Bridge as a District Supervisor of Field Offices, where he helped direct field operations on construction projects at the Garden State Plaza and the Tappan Zee Bridge. From 1956 thru 1968 Dan worked as an Estimator for Victor Steel Products in the Bronx, NY.

Dan was one of the four founding partners of Brakewell Steel Fabricators in 1969. Originally located in The Bronx, Brakewell opened a facility in Chester, NY in 1978, where Brakewell celebrated its 40-year anniversary earlier this year. Dan retired in 1997 after working in the steel fabrication business in the greater NYC-metropolitan area for almost 50 years, where he was a truly respected giant in the industry.

Dan and his family were residents of Englewood, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, and Franklin Lakes, NJ prior to moving to West Milford in 1998. He was previously a member of Mount Carmel R.C. Church in Ridgewood; Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes; and most recently Our Lady Queen of Peace in West Milford, NJ. Dan served in many volunteer capacities for the church, including Eucharistic Minister and Lector. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1736. He also served as a Lay Chaplain at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ and at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains, NJ for many years in a voluntary capacity on behalf of the Catholic Church. Most recently he volunteered as a Mediator for the Passaic County Court System.

A family statement reads: "Dad was an extraordinarily giving man in terms of being passionate about making a difference in the lives of anyone he interacted with professionally, socially, or in his many volunteer capacities. If success is measured by the degree to which one positively affects others, Dad was a superstar in the Success Dept. Even during the worst days of his illness, Dad was more concerned about the welfare of others than himself. Dad prided himself on always trying to "do the right thing". He loved crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and reading religious books. He just completed his first book about religions of the world and was thrilled to add "Author" to his list of accomplishments. Although he will be missed tremendously by his family and friends, his amazing spirit and work ethic will live on. He would want all of us to "Keep Smiling." We know that somewhere on God’s estate, Dad is out picking the plumpest raspberries he can find."

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many doctors and nurses at The Valley Hospital and at Chilton Hospital that cared for Dad during his many hospital stays; to Dr. Martin Frank; to Passaic Valley Hospice and the Metropolitan Home Health Care of New Jersey and their wonderfully caring nurses and aides for making his final days comfortable and peaceful; and to the many friends and neighbors that helped our Mom through this difficult time".
