De Freest, Eugene (Gene) W.  70, of Hewitt, NJ passed away peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease on January 21, 2018. He was born in Paterson, NJ and raised in Oakland, NJ. Gene was the son of the late Eugene and Dorothy (Alnor) De Freest. He graduated from Ramapo High School in 1965 and joined his family business. Thereafter, he was employed by Glen Rock Stair, Corp. for many years until his retirement.  Gene was extremely proud of his time spent in scouting and had the honor of being named the first Eagle Scout in Oakland.  He continued his dedication to scouting by mentoring young boys with various projects utilizing his fine woodworking skills.  He was an excellent craftsman both in occupation and as a hobby. His true joy was buying and selling antiques and refinishing old furniture. Gene loved his NY Yankees & NJ Devils.  Gene is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joan (Feliciano) De Freest, formerly of Hawthorne, NJ.  He was the father of Kara (De Freest) Maskerines and her husband Jacob and Krista (De Freest) Tripodi and her late husband Philip. In addition, he leaves his dear granddaughters, Kailey and Rachel Maskerines and his buddy “Philly”.  He also is survived by his brother Daryl De Freest and wife Diane of Warwick, NY as well as brother-in- laws, David V. Feliciano, MD and wife Grace and Donald V. Feliciano as well as his nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 4-8 PM at Richards Funeral Home, 1440 Union Valley Rd., West Milford, NJ  07480. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the funeral home.  Interment will follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J.
