Margaret Annamarie (Orth). Born in the Bronx, NY, on December 7,
1930, she grew up in North Arlington and Lyndhurst NJ, where her
parents, Alois and Magdalena, owned a grocery. She worked long hours
helping them as a child and teen, stocking shelves, going to farmers
markets and delivering groceries. Attending Queen of Peace in
North Arlington, she later graduated second in her class at Lyndhurst
High School, earning the top math prize and other distinctions.
She attended college courses at Rutgers-Newark and Mountainside Hospital
School of Nursing, before becoming a bookkeeper. While
working at First National Bank in Rutherford, she met Henry Drost whom
she married in 1953. They lived in Newport, RI and Key West, FL
during Hank’s naval service, before settling in Erskine Lakes
Ringwood, NJ. In 1957, they built a home in West Milford, NJ,
where she has resided for the past 60 years. Hank, a
former Officer and Director of Lakeland Bank, predeceased her in 1994.
She raised a family of three children and many pets. Animals,
especially cats, were dear to Margaret and she supported numerous animal
and environmental causes and enjoyed aiding the local shelter. She
collected, packed and mailed books overseas to developing areas of the
world, helping to stock libraries in Ghana and Sri Lanka. In 1977,
Margaret returned to the workforce, working at a pottery factory in
Butler NJ, before starting her own jewelry business in the 80s.
Talented at sewing and crafts, there was little that she couldn’t
figure out how to make herself. Margaret sewed several
hundred fleece blankets for the Linus Project, which provides comfort
blankets to hospitalized children. She was an avid gardener,
collecting daylilies, Siberian irises, and flat rocks, sharing her love
of plants with all. She was fascinated by many subjects including
archaeology, religious history, geology & natural history, costume
and clothing, art history, European royal history and crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her 3 children, Kathryn Drost, Eric Drost, and
Jeffrey Drost and his wife Michele, and two grandchildren, Eric and
Alyssa. She leaves behind her 4 beloved cats and grand-dog, Olaf.
