Surrounded by his Family, beloved Father, dedicated husband, and US Navy Veteran, Bill Turner passed away on September 6, 2017 at Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains, New Jersey. His life was full of many happy moments, challenges and achievements, primarily in his home State of New Jersey and directly related to his Family and Community. Bill was born Feb. 20,1930 in Newark, New Jersey and then began a life journey with many “milestones” along the way, as his childhood friends would say, with sheer “Bulldog” determination, hence, his early childhood nickname. Raised in Orange, New Jersey by a single Mom, her dream was for Bill to attend Seton Hall Prep and College. Bill would do both. He received and academic scholarship, and graduated, from Seton Hall Prep in 1948. Immediately upon graduation he began working at Schering (Plough) in Newark within the mail room operation. He would rise from this initial mailer role to a Director of Real Estate Operations, managing Schering Plough’s national distribution over a 40 year career. Immediately upon graduating from Seton Hall Prep, Bill aspired to attend and graduate from Rutgers, however initially the economic cost stood in the way. That challenge, and opportunity, would be delayed a few years until after he served his Country in the Korean War within the United States Navy. Upon his return home to New Jersey, and to work again Schering, and with the assistance of his Veteran’s Benefits he enrolled at Rutgers Newark Night school and Graduated in 1963. While working at Schering, Bill met the woman of his dreams, Elaine Galtier, a beautiful French girl who had come to the United States from war torn France. It was love at first sight, and their 55 year marriage was a testament to the best of Franco-American relationships. Bill and Elaine were blessed to have 4 children in their Family, all raised in New Jersey. John Turner (wife, Barbara), Kim Wentworth (husband, Finn) Greg Turner (wife, Colleen) and Leslie Meril. In addition, Bill had 9 very special grandchildren, who due to his wife Elaine’s direct French influence, knew Bill as “Grandpere”, they are Patrick Stepp, Christine Turner, Jessica Manzilla (husband, Jason), Mark Wentworth (wife, Katie), Grant Wentworth (wife, Meghan), Brock Turner, Erin Turner, Sammi Meril and Jesse Meril, along with a great grandson Sean Turner. Bill was a handsome, fun loving man who loved to “Jitterbug”, and cycled will into his 70’s. He enjoyed all sports, but especially a fan of Seton Hall Basketball and Rutgers football. His lifelong passion (besides Elaine), was fishing at the Jersey shore, often accompanied by a child, grandchild, or more. A Private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, a thoughtful gift to Seton Hall Prep for a Scholarship in Bill Turner’s Memorial will be used to pave the road forward for another aspiring young New Jersey child. Seton Hall Prep, Presidents/Headmaster Fund, 120 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052 would be appreciated.
